Famous Libertarian Quotes

If you are not free to choose wrongly and irresponsibly, you are not free at all. – Jacob Hornberger

The magic of any effective system is the innovation that appears within the system. You cannot optimize a system without allowing for innovation within the system. Innovation is nothing but doing what hasn’t been done in the past. Having not been done in the past,  it’s easy for innovation to be considered stupid. That is, until it’s proven to be innovative. At that point we act like it was inevitable.

One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation. – Thomas B. Reed

Words on paper holds no value beyond the value we give them. To think that legislating anything can control the real issue is naive. People discuss using laws for just about everything these days but we forget about the laws that we ignore on a regular basis (speed limit anyone?) The laws mean little to nothing to protect us.

The power to tax is the power to destroy. – John Marshall

As long as we accept that someone has the moral right to tax us, we will always be at the mercy of that force. The government claims the right to tax us. The government claims the right to increase the tax on us. That means the government, at any point, claims that they can ethically take everything that its citizens have earned. That means we are little more than slaves at the mercy of government.

The United States is a nation of laws, badly written and randomly enforced. – Frank Zappa

Densely written laws make it difficult to understand what is legal and what is not. Broad terms within those laws make it so it is more likely that you are breaking the law than not. The uneven enforcement of the laws means that people that don’t understand the laws are always at the mercy of those that are allowed (but not required) to enforce them. There are so many laws that no one can know them all.

It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong. – Voltaire

They can take everything from you for anything that they find unappealing. The system is in place to do terribly unethical things. We only need a few bad apples to take advantage of it for everything to go wrong.

Are they taking advantage of it?
