What Are The Best Liberty Quotes Around? Add Your Favorite

March 28, 2013 by Liberty

I’ve been posting a lot of painfully heavy articles on self-ownership for the last weak or two so I thought I’d lighten the mood a bit with a few of the best liberty quotes. Make sure to go into the comment box and leave your personal favorites.

I’ve also included a few of the opposite of the best liberty quotes. Ok… the worst quotes I found in my hunt. Feel free to include any you don’t like as well. I included a bit of an explanation for the bad ones. The good ones are pretty self explanatory.

“Liberty has never come from government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of government. The history of liberty is the history of resistance.”

Woodrow Wilson

“Liberty is the only thing you cannot have unless you are willing to give it to others.”

Willian Allen White

“When will the world learn that a million men are of no importance compared with one man?”

Henry David Thoreau

“A man is a sovereign unto himself, and may only be ruled by his own consent.”

John Wilkes

“Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.”

George Bernard Shaw.

“There will never be a really free and enlightened state, until the state comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly.”

Henry David Thoreau

“When the people fear the government, you have tyranny. When the government fears the people, you have freedom.”

Thomas Paine

“Goverment is actually the worst failure of civilized man. There has never been a really good one, and even those that are the most tolerable are arbitary, cruel, grasping, and unintelligent.”

H.L. Mencken

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

Benjamin Franklin

The WORST Liberty Quotes!!!!!

Okay, some of these aren’t the worst but I disagree adamantly.

“Anyone in a free society where the laws are unjust has an obligation to break the law.”

Henry David Thoreau

With an obligation to fight the laws comes a loss of liberty in itself. While it may be a good thing to do, the obligation is an attack on liberty. I say, fight whatever laws you want. Ignore the ones you don’t give two toots about.

“Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.”

I find this to be a bit of a useless statement. According to this, the American government should have grown into the most free country ever. It hasn’t. In my opinion, liberty does not take root. It does not grow. It might be nice to think it exists in some tangible form but it doesn’t. Liberty dies when the people that have it die. Liberty lives when people choose to let it live.

“Liberty is a bitch who must be bedded on a mattress of corpses.”

I find this one absolutely silly. I don’t know the context. I know I disagree with the obvious meaning but I do find it wildly amusing. Yea… cause we know… subservience doesn’t get anyone killed. Nope. Never

Okay. That was my little scurry into the world of the best liberty quotes. Be sure to include any of your favorites in the comment section.

  1. Orange Atheist says:

Beside “Give me liberty or give me death”, one of my favorites is, “The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.”
    ― Patrick Henry

  2. “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
    Martin Luther King Jr.

By the way, I like your blog. It’s similar to mine.
