Being is about trying to look at the world from an unbiased perspective. It requires a constant reassessment of believes. It also requires watching for evidence. Compared to the average life of work, food, and television, it can be rather stressful. (Really… I get the urge to kill myself every time I glance at a television that was left on the news. Does anyone really believe they’re not full of crap anymore? Do I really care about those celebrities? And why are both politicians debating on the same side of the issue?)
If I’ve learned one thing since I began to study libertarianism, it’s that you can’t take all the craziness personally. No, you can’t change the world. You can only try. The only thing that you can truly change is your own life. In fact, the more you change your own life, the more you can improve the world.
Many of these are a way of hedging your bets. Sure, no one wants major catastrophes to occur but if they do, you might as well get a little benefit too.
Keep that on your mind as you read these 7 ways to profit off the state (mentally and financially):
1. Use Government “Benefits”!
Yes… I said it. I realize that 90% of you are ideologically brainwashed into thinking their is something immoral about taking money that’s been stolen from you but if you’d actually benefit from the government benefits then use them.
Many older libertarians wonder whether or not they should use their social security benefits. The money is being stolen from the workers of today, that leaves a question in peoples minds about the ethics. Truthfully, their is no ethics. Will your not taking the benefits actually reduce the theft? If you believe that then maybe you shouldn’t take them but I think that’s an insane thought. (Have they ever decided to actually take less?)
Stolen money is stolen money. There is no way around it. If someone stole your wallet and gave you a small portion of your money, is it ethical to take the money? IT DOESN’T MATTER.
2. Own (Some) Stocks
The government of the United States has repeatedly proven that it’s willing to keep big business alive at the expense of the tax payer. That means, as long you pick a politically secure business that’s growing, your investment is going to be relatively safe.
There are some risks involved with stocks but it also protects your money from a number of governments worst risks.
3. Don’t Own Many US Dollars
The US dollar is surviving on a bubble that’s never been seen before in history. It’s being printed faster than ever but people are still accepting it. Other than your day to day living expenses, you should not be saving your money is dollar bills. You need to be saving your money in assets that would grow against the loss of the dollar. One option is stocks. Many people are also interested in buying large amounts of food (in case of a major catastrophe.) My personal favorite is…
4. Own Precious Metals
This is a great time to be getting into precious metals. The price of gold and silver has been steadily increasing with only a few relatively small hiccups. Looking at independent measures of inflation make the decision clear. Every time the government prints a dollar, gold’s value (not always it’s price) increases.
Do you think the US is going to be able to print this much forever? I feel much safer with my money in gold. (200 years of history in the dollar. Thousands of years of history in gold. Remember that.)
5. Learn To Laugh
The next time a statist says something stupid like, “Without government, how would we stop murder!?” ignoring the millions of people murdered by governments, don’t stress about it. Laugh about it. These people are not being evil. They’re just being stupid.
Learn to look at statists in the same way you look at a clown. I could worry about why the clowns are acting like idiots or I could just laugh it off.
Sure, you can try to help them learn, but don’t let them drag you down.
6. Get In The Business Of Government
Government businesses are some of the most secure businesses in the world right now. I hate to say it but they’re growing faster than ever. The business of government can be a government employee, a government contractor, or even a government compliance employee (like a tax accountant.)
This can help you tolerate the insanity a little easier by knowing it keeps your bank account growing. You may hate the state, but they do pay well.
7. Go In The “Anti-Government” Business
Who benefits most from the drug war?
The drug cartels. They benefit from reduced competition.
This is definitely not for the feint of heart but their are plenty of anti-government businesses that won’t leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Is their something that is illegal that you don’t think should be? Then help people get away with it. You can even charge them for it.
Think underground railroad meets agorism.
If you think gambling is ethical then you could teach people how to gamble online using Bitcoins for a cut. You can even just sign them up with an affiliate program to make a percentage. If it weren’t for government, people wouldn’t need your service.
There are a million ways that you can benefit from governments existence.
At no point does that mean you should sacrifice your principles. If you think any of these ideas are too far then take some time to ask yourself why.
You may never be able to change the world but you can change yourself. In fact, one of the best ways to get people to change is by proving that they could be better off by changing. Becoming better off yourself is one great way to prove it.
